A 3D geological model of the horn of Africa: New insights for hydrogeological simulations of deep groundwater systems

The area of interest comprises 1.6 million km² the Horn Africa, extending 60 km offshore Gulf Aden and Indian Ocean, delimited by Tana River in Kenya Rift Valley Ethiopia. Deep (> 400 m) groundwater resources are virtually unexplored Africa. One main challenges this vast sparsely documented area, is producing solid geological models. This paper presents a first-order assessment deep structure water region, based on integration data from hydrogeological Oil & Gas exploration. Public domain cross-sections, maps, satellite reinterpreted, defining extent formations subsurface. benefits using multi-source modelling platform, subsurface mapping software hydrogeology sectors, proprietary scripts. present study reveals new evidence presence aquifer systems model outputs include extent, predicted thickness, salinity, petrophysical properties potential aquifers. results first extensive 3D for region provide insights into transboundary aquifers can be used as baseline further investigations and, ultimately, quantifying total region.
